What to put on a motorsport mechanic CV so teams call you

How to write a motorsport mechanic CV or profile that team managers actually read: series, cars, roles, seasons, tools, licences, availability and who will vouch for you.

Team managers read CVs in the time between two other jobs. They're scanning for a few specific things, and if they can't see them in seconds, they move on. Here's what to put first.

Lead with the work, not the adjectives

"Passionate", "hard-working" and "team player" are on every CV, so they don't help you stand out. What a team manager wants to see is the work itself, written as a list:

  • Series and cars. "British GT, Porsche 911 GT3 R, 2024 and 2025 seasons."
  • Your role. "Number two mechanic, pit-stop wheel changer, rear corner."
  • What you did. "Damper and spring changes between sessions, gearbox rebuilds, pre-event car builds."
  • Who you did it for. Team names, if you're allowed to share them.

Put your specialisms where they can be seen

If you're the gearbox person, the electrics person or the data person, say so near the top. Teams often need one specific skill for a weekend, and that's the thing they search for.

Tools, licences and tickets

  • Your own toolkit, and anything specialist you bring (corner-weight scales, torque wrenches).
  • A full UK driving licence, HGV C+E, and any Motorsport UK or FIA licences you hold.
  • First aid and any fire-safety or refuelling training.

Say when you're free

This is the most-missed line on a motorsport CV. Teams hire for dates. "Free for most of October; booked 17th to 19th" is gold to a team manager with a gap.

A reference from someone the team manager knows beats anything you write about yourself. After every job, ask for a short confirmation that you did the work, and keep it with your CV.
